Howie Severino to receive Adamson University media award

Howie Severino to receive Adamson University media award

GMA News Online editor-in-chief Howie Severino will receive the first award that Adamson University in Manila will confer on outstanding journalists who help raise public awareness about poverty in the Philippines.

“We have recommended Mr. Severino as the first recipient of the AdU Media Award because of his significant contribution in public education and information.” said Prof. Jeanie Derillo, Chairperson of the Mass Communication Department of Adamson.

According to a press release from the school, the award will be conferred on Severino by University President Rev. Fr. Gregorio Banaga Jr.,CM, in a ceremony at the Adamson University Theater on February 10 at 3:00 p.m.

The awarding ceremony is part of the week-long celebration of the 79th founding anniversary of Adamson, an academic institution that is committed to providing quality education to the socially disadvantaged, according to the news release.

The Adamson University Mass Media Award was created to identify the country’s journalists who use their creativity and passion to call attention to the plight of the poor.

“Mr. Severino embodies the institution’s vision and core values through his work ethics and passion,” said Dr. Servillano Marquez, Dean of College of Education and Liberal Arts.

Severino has been a journalist since 1988 and has reported on a wide range of issues. He began his career as a newspaper reporter at the Manila Chronicle, became a co-founder of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, and shifted to television via The Probe Team.

He joined I-Witness on GMA Network in 2002 and helped popularize the documentary genre among the youth, coinciding with the technological revolution that put filmmaking tools in the hands of many non-professionals.

Since 2009, Severino has been editor-in-chief of GMANews.TV, now known as GMA News Online, leading a multimedia team developing innovative ways to tell stories.

Starting this month, he will be co-anchoring the morning news program, News To Go, on GMA Network’s all-news channel, GMA News TV. – VVP/YA, GMA News
