V-League: Adamson, NU try to bolster respective bids

V-League: Adamson, NU try to bolster respective bids
Season 7 second conference titlist Adamson University and National U try to bolster their respective bids in the Shakey’s V-League Season 8 first conference when they take on separate opponents on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Falcons of coach Dulce Pante battle fancied Ateneo in the 4 p.m. main game hoping to stay in the hunt for the last Final Four berth in Group A, while the Lady Bulldogs eye a first ever semis stint against Far Eastern U in the opener.

Adamson will be facing an Ateneo team that is aiming to win its sixth straight game.

NU, meanwhile, is fresh from a 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 triumph over Southwestern University of Cebu to even its record to 1-1.

A win by the Lady Bulldogs over the Lady Tams in their 2 p.m. encounter will earn them a semis berth in Group B.

FEU, on the other hand, is also trying to win as many games to keep its own semis bid alive.

Bacolod’s University of St. La Salle (2-0) clinched the first Final Four slot in Group B to become the first Visayan team to advance into the next round since the league accepted top provincial squads four seasons ago. - JVP, GMA News

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) National University toughened up when it needed most as it held off Arellano University, 55-47 in a come from behind fashion Thursday in the Filoil Flying V Pre-season tournament at the Arena in San Juan.

Meanwhile, Adamson trumped University of the Philippines, 65-57, even as Far Eastern kept its unbeaten slate by slamming Mapua, 77-65.

The Bulldogs, led by their prized rookies, came alive in the last five minutes to turn the game around from a 41-45 deficit early in the fourth en route to their third win in as many matches.

The highly-touted Ray Parks Jr. punched in 16 points for NU while the pocket-sized Cedric Labingisa added 13.

“Their big guy [Mammie] dominated us and we adjusted in the last five minutes by playing zone and that’s where we controlled it,” said NU head coach Eric Altamirano.

Charles Mammie had 21 points in a losing cause for the Chiefs.

Guard Lester Alvarez, meanwhile, came in the aid of the Falcons with 12 points as their bigs Eric Camson and Januz Lozada combined for 21 points.

“We’re starting to slowly work our game up. I was happy with our win but at the same time I know we still need to improve,” said Adamson coach Leo Austria.

The Tamaraws, which also won third straight, drew solid support from Hippolyte Noundou who had 17, and Terrence Romeo who contributed 16.

V-League: Adamson, FEU secure q'finals seats

V-League: Adamson, FEU secure q'finals seats

Adamson closed out its elimination round campaign with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-16, win over College of St. Benilde Sunday in the Shakey’s V-League Season 8 first conference at The Arena in San Juan City.

The win put the Lady Falcons in a three-way tie for the lead with idle Perpetual Help Lady Altas and the St. La Salle-Bacolod Lady Stingers with similar 3-1 slates.

But the Lady Falcons could only end up at No.3, owing to an inferior tie-break score after they lost to the Lady Altas via forfeiture for violation of eligibility rules.

The Lady Altas secured the No.1 spot in Group A and edged the Lady Stingers due to a higher FIVB ratio.

Adamson will advance into the next round with a 0-1 carry-over slate and will join No.1 Ateneo and No.3 Lyceum of the Philippines University in the group.

“Basta lalaban na lang kami,” said Adamson coach Dulce Pante.

Three Lady Falcons finished in double figures — Michelle Carolino (17), Angela Benting (14) and Paulina Soriano (11).

The Lady Blazers absorbed their fourth straight setback, their 14th straight since last season’s first conference. Their latest loss gave National University a free ride to the quarterfinals.

NU carries a 1-3 win-loss card and secures the fourth and last quarterfinals slot in Group B.

In the second game, Far Eastern University spoiled the return of San Sebastian import Jeng Bualee as the Lady Tamaraws upstaged their rivals, 26-24, 28-26, 22-25, 25-13, and claimed the last quarterfinals seat in Group B.

The Lady Tamaraws raced to a hot start in the fourth set as they posted a 9-4 lead and never looked back to end the campaign of the Lady Stags.

FEU also won the first two tightly-fought sets, but lost the third set when the hard-hitting Bualee began to make her presence felt for San Sebastian.

The Thai import led the Lady Stags with 26 hits and two blocks, but she failed to get ample support from her teammates as the Lady Tamaraws went for the kill in the fourth set. - RCJ, GMA News
